AT LAST LUXURY SKI CHALETS IN AMERICA !

 

With a snowfall averaging 30 feet a year and the pound prevailing over the dollar, the US ski market has benefited from an influx of British skiers.  The well-groomed slopes of the Rocky Mountains have proven to be a magnet for many European skiers happy to wave to goodbye to the Alps in exchange for the more predictable Coloradon snowfall.

The chalet business, however, has remained unique to the Alps with European ski lovers venturing across the Atlantic left to their own devices in self-catered condominiums. 

British couple Helen Gienke and Rob Brown identified the gap in the market for European style chalets in the US and set up “Chalets USA” (www.chalets-usa.co.uk), whilst taking a career break from their Marketing jobs at Boots' Nottingham-based headquarters shortly after the Millennium.  Having returned to their jobs only to be made redundant last year, a twist of fate saw them return to Winter Park, a little-known Coloradon resort they made home.

“We love living in Colorado” says Rob, “compared to Europe the skiing is amazing - the fluffy powder snow, deserted slopes and 300 days of sunshine a year, give you the ski holiday you've always dreamed of.”

Winter Park Resort receives the most snow out of all Coloradon destinations and happens to be the nearest to Denver International, a two-hour shuttle journey away.  Securing Chalet Bluebell, a luxury chalet sleeping 8-9, the couple combine the Alpine tradition of providing afternoon tea and cake with the attraction of favourite American style breakfasts ahead of a day on the slopes.

A qualified ski-technician, Rob will fit boots and skis in the chalet and a free shuttle bus transports skiers to the five mountain range.  The couple, who have met stringent standards in high altitude cuisine, serve a three-course meal with wine to guests each evening with the option of authentic cowboy saloon bars on the doorstep to explore.
